Is Your Outdated Technology Driving Talent Away?

Old technology may be costing you more than you think.

The majority of business owners know by now that their company’s most important asset is its people. A well trained and happy employee is an employee who cares about and contributes to the success of the company. But an increasing number of workers in today’s technology based work environment are admitting that the daily frustrations of bad technology are driving them to consider other employment options.

A recent study performed by Robert Half Technology, an international IT staffing provider, found that the average employee wastes approximately 22 minutes per day on technology related issues*. While that may not seem like much in the overall scope of an 8 hour workday, based on a 40 hour work week, that averages out to approximately 91 hours of lost time over the course of a year. That’s two weeks worth of wasted time!

If you’re frustrated by these numbers, you can bet your employees are as well. Spending extra time each day dealing with problems caused by old technology significantly reduces your employees’ productivity and increases their dissatisfaction with their job. This can translate to lost profits and lost employees. In a study by the UK’s Sharp, over half (53%) of employees responded that outdated technology negatively impacts their productivity while one in seven employees (14%) admitted that they would stop looking for a new job if their company’s technology was up to date**.

With the average person spending over 10 hours a day on screen time, it’s safe to assume that employees are increasingly tech savvy and expecting their employers to be the same. If a bright prospective employee walks into your office and sees your staff working on old desktops and outdated operating systems, chances are they’ll turn their sights elsewhere in the job search.

While it would be easy to blame clunky printers and 10 year-old desktops for your tech woes, it’s not just your hardware that causes issues for your employees. Outdated software plays a large role in the daily productivity drain. If your employees are utilizing systems that are bogged down with unnecessary processes or require multiple programs to accomplish a single task, they’re wasting valuable time that results in lost opportunities and profits for your company. And if your people out in the field are still using paper processes that then have to be translated to your data management system when they return to the office, you’re doubling their work and cutting their productivity in half. You’re also increasing the chance of user error negatively affecting your important data.

But your company’s technology doesn’t have to be a drain on your employees. The right hardware and software can not only make your company more profitable, it can make it a more enjoyable place to work, resulting in happier employees and a better chance of hiring new, quality individuals in the future.
