Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday all about having fun. It’s a day that everyone is a little bit Irish; a day to hang out with good friends while eating Irish stew and drinking a green beer or two. But have you ever stopped to wonder what is Saint Patrick’s Day even the celebration of? If so, we have the answer for you.

Saint Patrick’s Day is the cultural/religious celebration of the day Saint Patrick passed away, which was March 17th of 461 A.D. Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. Although he was not actually born in Ireland, he was a missionary bishop who has been given credit for Ireland converting to Christianity. There are many legends that have been told about Saint Patrick but most of what we know is from the book he wrote on the last year of his life, named Confessio.
Some other interesting facts about St Patrick’s Day are:

  • Every year in Chicago they dye The Chicago River green with 40 pounds of dye. The color only lasts for about 4 – 5 hours.
  • Leprechauns in folklore are a type of shoemaking fairy and if you catch one, it is said that they will grant you 3 wishes!
  • A common Irish tradition on St Patrick’s Day is to pinch anyone not wearing green. So make sure you are wearing green!
  • Did you know the chances of finding a 4 leaf clover are 1 in 10,000?
  • Saint Patrtick’s Day became an official holiday in Ireland in 1903.
